Age matters, but not the way you think
A washer's age is a starting point, not a verdict. Most home washers give solid service for around a decade, sometimes longer if the household is small and the loads are reasonable. What we look at is age plus history. A twelve-year-old machine that has never needed a thing and now wants one part is usually worth fixing. A five-year-old machine on its third repair is telling you something different. In older Norristown homes we also check the floor and the drain standpipe. Sometimes the washer isn't failing at all. What kind of failure is it
Some faults are simple. A worn drain pump, a broken lid switch, a torn door boot on a front loader, a clogged inlet screen. Those are contained problems. Replace the part, the machine goes back to normal work. Other faults touch the core of the machine. A failed transmission, a rusted-through outer tub, a cracked spider arm on a front loader drum, or a leak that has been dripping onto the base and cabinet for months. Those repairs mean pulling the machine most of the way apart. When the expensive heart of the washer is the thing that broke, replacement moves to the front of the line.
Can we still get the part
Parts availability quietly decides a lot of these calls. Common pumps, valves, belts, hoses and control boards for popular models are usually on the shelf or a day or two out. Discontinued models are trickier. Some control boards for older machines simply aren't made anymore, and the substitutes are hit or miss. We check availability before we recommend anything, because a repair you have to wait weeks for isn't much of a repair. If a part is truly gone, we say so plainly. No sense chasing a component that no longer exists while your laundry piles up in the hallway.
How the visit actually goes
We start by listening to you. When did it start, what does it sound like, does it happen on every cycle or just the big loads. Then we run the machine and watch it fail. Fill, agitate, drain, spin — each stage points somewhere. We check hoses, the drain, the level of the machine, and the error codes if it has a display. After that we tell you what broke, whether the part is available, and how involved the fix is. You get the real picture and you make the call. We don't push a repair we wouldn't do in our own basement.
When buying new is the honest answer
Replacement wins in a few clear cases. The outer tub or cabinet is rusted through and leaking. The drum bearing is gone on a front loader, which means a near-total teardown. Multiple systems failed at once on a machine already past its expected years. Or the part is discontinued with no reliable substitute. Also worth weighing: if your machine has flooded the laundry area twice, or it never really handled your family's load size, a fix just restores a bad fit. Is it worth fixing a washer that shakes hard on spin?
Often yes. Violent shaking is frequently leveling, an unbalanced load, or worn suspension rods — all fixable. If it's a failed drum bearing or cracked spider, that's a teardown and replacement usually makes more sense.
Should I repair a machine I already had fixed last year?
Depends what broke. A different, unrelated part failing on an otherwise sound machine is normal. Repeated failures in the same system, or a third repair on an older washer, points toward replacing it.
