What a dead element is actually telling you
An electric cooktop element is a simple heater. Power comes in, resistance makes heat, a control decides how long the power stays on. When one element goes cold and the others still work, the problem is almost always local to that burner: the element itself, its connection, or the switch behind that knob. When several elements die at once, or the whole cooktop is dead, we start thinking about the power feed instead. Same goes for a radiant glass top that heats weakly everywhere. So the first question we ask on the phone is simple: one burner, or more than one?
Cause family one: the element and its socket
On coil cooktops, the element plugs into a receptacle like a two-prong plug. Those prongs arc over the years. Boil-overs run down into the socket. You get a burned, pitted contact that no longer passes full current, and the burner heats slow, uneven, or not at all. Look at the prongs when the coil is cold and unplugged from the surface unit. Black scorching, melted plastic, or a loose wobbly fit all point here. Replacing a burned element without replacing the burned receptacle just cooks the new one. We check both together on radiant glass tops, the element sits under the glass, so this one is ours.
Cause family two: the infinite switch behind the knob
That knob doesn't dim the burner like a lamp dimmer. It runs an infinite switch that cycles power on and off in a repeating pattern. High means longer on-time. Low means shorter. When contacts inside the switch wear out, you get a burner that only works on high, only works if you jiggle the knob, or clicks and does nothing. A burner that heats full blast no matter where you set it is also a switch symptom, and that one deserves attention soon, since it means the heat isn't being controlled.
Cause family three: power and wiring
Electric cooktops run on 240 volts, which is really two 120-volt legs. Lose one leg at the breaker and you get strange behavior: burners that warm faintly, an oven that bakes but won't broil, a clock that works while nothing heats. Check your panel. A double breaker can trip on one side and still look like it's on, so flip it fully off, then firmly back on. If it trips again, stop and call. Beyond the breaker, we're looking at wire nuts, terminal blocks, and the harness under the cooktop, and that means panels come off. Leave that part to us.
Safe checks versus what we do
Safe for you: unplug the range or shut its breaker, then swap a suspect coil element with a same-size working one from another position. If the problem follows the coil, it's the element. If the dead spot stays put, it's the socket or switch. Also wipe the receptacle area, confirm the coil seats firmly, and reset the breaker once. Stop there. What we do differently: we meter the element's resistance, test the switch cycling under load, read voltage on both legs at the terminal block, and inspect the harness for heat damage. Can I just buy a replacement coil myself?
Sometimes, yes, if the coil is plug-in and the socket is clean. But if the receptacle is scorched, a new coil will burn too. Look at the contacts first. If they're pitted or melted, both parts need replacing.
Why does one burner only work on high?
That's usually the infinite switch behind the knob. Its contacts stick or wear, so the burner stops cycling and stays fully on. It's a control part, not the element, and it should be replaced rather than lived with.
My glass cooktop shows a red glow but nothing gets hot. Why?
Some glass tops have a separate indicator light that stays lit whenever the surface is warm or a knob is on. A glow doesn't confirm the element under the glass is drawing power. That needs testing.
